A black footed ferret perks up as it looks out for a meal among the snow covered field. The Black-footed Ferret is a rarity on the Great Plains. Once numerous, the small animals were harvested for the fur trade. That, coupled with a loss of habitat, resulted in a declining population and it was eventually declared extinct in 1979. Two years later, a small population of the animal was discovered on a private ranch in Wyoming and a captive breeding program was launched. Since then, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service has been gradually releasing the Black-footed Ferret in eight states in what was once its native region. It recently was introduced to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge near Denver, Colorado and by all accounts, the program has been successful. That is where this image was captured.
My name is Tony and I am a Denver native, a proud veteran of the United States Navy, an IT manager, a weather geek and of course a photographer. My interest in photography started in high school and was spurred on by my parents generously giving me my first SLR for Christmas one year. That Canon AE-1 Program took an awful lot of pictures as I dabbled in my then-new hobby. Since then, a camera has never been far from my side. A Canon EOS 620 accompanied me to the Persian Gulf and many other locations domestic and abroad when I was in the military.
